Terps Take On Towson In Tuesday Tilt

March 13, 2006

MARYLAND CLASHES WITH TOWSON IN BELTWAY BATTLE

  • The Maryland Terrapins (6-10, 2-4 ACC) will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday afternoon when they head to Baltimore to take on Towson in their first of five games in a six-day period.
  • The Terps come into their matchup with the Tigers having lost three straight, courtesy of an ACC series sweep by second-ranked Florida State in Tallahassee last weekend. Maryland's last six games have all been on the road and four of the team's next five will be played away from Shipley Field, as well.
  • Maryland leads the all-time series with Towson, 30-23-2. The Terps have won two of the last three meetings with the Tigers and four of the last six. Last season, the teams played three times with Maryland winning twice. On Feb. 26, 2005 the Terps defeated the Tigers, 7-1. Then on May 4, the schools split a doubleheader at Shipley Field. Maryland dropped the opener, 7-5, then came back to take the nightcap, 20-5. In that victory, the Terps established team season highs in runs, hits (24), doubles (8), home runs (4) and strikeouts by the pitching staff (14). Shortstop Elliot Singletary went 4-for-6 with a pair of home runs and five RBI and third baseman Matt Maropis finished 5-or-6 with five runs, three RBI and a stolen base.
  • Tuesday's game will be broadcast online by WMUC Sports at www.wmucsports.com with Edan Algazy on the call. First pitch at the John Schuerholz Complex is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

    SCOUTING THE TIGERS

  • Towson comes into Tuesday's contest with Maryland having lost three in a row and seven of eight. The Tigers are 4-10 overall and 0-3 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action after suffering a three-game sweep at the hands of Virginia Commonwealth last weekend.
  • The Tigers are 1-1 at home this year and 4-9 in day games. They are 2-7 against right-handed pitchers.
  • Towson is powered by designated hitter A.J. Tinnerella, who is batting .358 with 18 RBI in 13 games this year and centerfielder Kyle Skellchock, who is hitting at a .352 clip. As a team, Towson has stolen 16 bases in 17 attempts this season, led by third baseman Gary Helmick, leftfielder Demetrios Nomikos and second baseman Brian Conley who each have three steals apiece.
  • On the hill for the Tigers reliever Nate Curd owns a team-best two victories in four appearances. Matt Holley (1-3, 5.84) leads the club in innings pitched at 24.2 while starter Chris Rhoades (0-2, 5.85) has struck out a team-high 18 batters.
