WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The nationally-ranked University of Maryland women's tennis team had its season-opening winning streak snapped Wednesday afternoon at the hands of the No. 12-ranked College of William & Mary which posted a 5-2 non-conference victory over the Terps at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.

The Tribe improved to 6-0 with the win, while the No. 32 Terps fell to 6-1. William & Mary defeated its third-straight ranked opponent, including a win over No. 1 Georgia Tech last week.

William & Mary, paced by the top-ranked duo in the nation and a top-10 singles player, swept the doubles to earn one point and went on to capture four singles points.

Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic, who are ranked No. 1 nationally, had to battle to defeat the Terps' Marianne Baker and Eleanor Peters 8-6 at the No. 1 position.

The Terps won at the No. 1 and 2 singles spots, but the Tribe captured the other four matches in straight sets.

Maryland started out strong as Baker, who is ranked No. 75 nationally, upset Zoricic, the 68th-ranked player in the nation at the No. 1 position. Baker won in straight sets (6-4, 6-4).

Playing at the No. 2 position, Peters had the victory of the day for Maryland as she outlasted the fifth-ranked player in the country, edging Levy in a tiebreaker 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (13-11).

But it was all Tribe from there.

Ragini Acharya defeated Michal Amir 7-5, 6-0 at the No. 3 position. Acharya also combined with Magdelena Bresson to down Amir and Maggie MacKeever 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Maryland freshman Elyse Steiner, playing in the No. 4 position, had to retire in the second set of her match with Barbara Zidek, losing 6-4, 4-0.

Steiner and fellow freshman Lisa Miller also lost at No. 3 doubles, falling 8-4 to Zidek and Lauren Sabacinski.

Bresson downed MacKeever 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 position and Sabacinski beat Miller 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6.

The Terps look to get back on the winning track this weekend when they return home to play host to Richmond at 1 p.m. Saturday and No. 14 Virginia Commonwealth at noon Sunday. Both matches will take place at the Tennis Center at College Park.
