Three Incoming Men's Lacrosse Players Selected To U.S. U-19 National Team

July 16, 2007

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Three incoming University of Maryland men's lacrosse players were among the 23 named to the U.S. Men's U-19 national team that will represent the United States in the 2008 International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) Under-19 World Championship.

Midfielder Tony Mendes, defender Max Schmidt and attackman Ryan Young, who will each be freshmen at Maryland this coming season, made the team, which was selected by a 24-person player selection committee from 120 invitees.

This is just the latest honor for the future Terrapins. All three were named 2007 Under Armour All-Americans.

Mendes was a two-time team MVP at East Chapel Hill High School in Chapel Hill, N.C., where he amassed 178 goals, 125 assists and over 300 groundballs during his career. This past season he netted 75 goals, while dishing out 37 assists.

Schmidt, an impressive 6-foot-3, 220-pound specimen, was named the 2007 OHSLA player of the year following a dominating performance for Upper Arlington High School in Upper Arlington, Ohio. Schmidt is also an outstanding student who maintained a 3.3 GPA and was named a 2007 US Lacrosse Scholastic All-American.

Young is an all-around offensive talent out of Manhasset High School in Manhasset, N.Y. This past season he scored 35 goals and collected 41 assists, elevating his career prep totals to 79 goals and 63 assists. Earlier this summer he scored two goals and added an assist at the Under Armour All-America game.

The ILF U-19 World Championship is set for July 3-12, 2008, in Coquitlam, British Columbia.

Maryland's three selections to the team bring its total of U-19 U.S. national team players to 13. The Terps have been represented at all six of the U-19 world championships.
