NORFOLK, Va. -
The Maryland women's basketball team will wrap up a seven-game road trip on Sunday when they take on the Lady Monarchs of Old Dominion at 1 p.m. in Norfolk, Va. The Terrapins have gone 5-1 thus far on their excursion, and are coming off an 83-52 victory at Loyola in Baltimore.
The No. 15/16 Terrapins (8-2) have not met Old Dominion since 1993, when they went on the road to Norfolk and claimed a 77-61 victory. Maryland is 10-8 all time in the series between the two traditional women's basketball powers.
The Terps are concluding a seven-game road trip, which has seen them travel a combined 2,268 miles away from College Park. Maryland swept through the Cancun Caribbean Challenge, defeating South Dakota State, Montana and Illinois. They followed that up with a win at then-No. 17/20 Purdue before falling at No. 24 Pittsburgh. The Terps rebounded just a few miles up I-95 when they trounced the Greyhounds in Baltimore on Dec. 9.
While it has been nearly a month since Maryland last played a home game, it has been 12 long days since they last played a game, period. With the team focusing on exams between Dec. 9 and Sunday, the Terrapins sat through their longest break during the regular season since the 1995-96 campaign. That year, Maryland came out of a 13-day layoff and claimed a 50-31 win at Towson State.
In the victory over Loyola, Maryland was excited to welcome in redshirt-freshman Kim Rodgers who, at long last, got on the court for the first time as a Terp. Rodgers made the most of her first appearance, going 4-for-4 from the floor, all behind the arc, and totaled 14 points.
Maryland was led by senior Marissa Coleman against Loyola. Coleman put together her second double-double of the season leading all players with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman Lynetta Kizer recorded her third double-double of the year, contributing 15 points and 11 boards off the bench. Her three double-doubles are tied for the second-most in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Junior Demauria Liles, who had 17 points at Loyola, is among those with three to their credit.
The victory over Loyola was one of the Terrapins' best defensive efforts of the season, as they held the Greyhounds to 26.1% shooting, the lowest output by a Terp opponent all season. Maryland will look to continue that against an Old Dominion team that has four players averaging double figures and scores nearly 80 points a game.
The Lady Monarchs are coming off an 81-76 loss at home to Tennessee on Thursday night. The Lady Volunteers snapped what was a 29-game home winning streak for Old Dominion. Sunday's contest will pit two of the best home court teams in the nation against each other, as Maryland enjoys a 24-game streak of their own at Comcast Center.
Tipoff for Sunday's game is set for 1 p.m. The game is being broadcast by the Terrapin Sports Radio Network. Check your local listings for the station in your area. In addition, the game is being covered by WMUC Sports at www.WMUCSports.com.
