DURHAM, N.C. - No. 3 Duke scored three unanswered goals in the final 12:04 and Jess Adams scored the game-winner with three seconds left to beat the No. 5 Maryland women's lacrosse team, 14-13, on March 1 at Koskinen Stadium. The last two games in the series have both been decided by a single goal.
Senior Lauren Cohen paced the Terps with four goals and an assist while classmate Kelly Kasper scored three goals. Senior Dana Dobbie had two goals and an assist while senior Casey Magor and sophomore Caitlyn McFadden chipped in with a goal and a pair of assists. Dobbie added nine draw controls and three caused turnovers.
Maryland held a significant 22-7 advantage in draws but turned the ball over 16 times compared to Duke's nine.
The two teams traded goals in the first 10 minutes of the game for a 3-3 score. The Terps got their three goals from different players as Kasper, Dobbie, and Cohen accounted for the scores.
After Maryland tied the game at 3-3, it went on to score three more unanswered goals to take a 6-3 lead with 16:58 to go in the half. McFadden made a nice move to free herself up and then found Cohen to give the Terps their first lead at 4-3.
Dobbie used a superior effort on the ensuing draw, diving to knock the loose ball to Kasper outside of the scrum. The draw turned into a Maryland possession and Cohen found a wide open Magor across the fan for the goal.
The Terps pushed their lead to three after it won the next draw and senior Katie Pumphrey brought it into the offensive third. She handed the ball of to senior Katie Princiotto who scored to give Maryland the 6-3 cushion.
Duke stormed right back though and tied the game up with three-consecutive goals of its own. Emma Hamm had a hand in the first two as she scored the first. Then she capitalized on a Maryland turnover and found Carolyn Davis in a transition break. Finally, Lindsay Gilbride scored on a pass from Christie Kaestner to deadlock the score with 9:05 left in the half.
The teams traded two more goals apiece to make it 8-8 with 3:15 left as Kasper and McFadden scored the goals for Maryland. With 2:48 left, Kasper made a run towards goal with the ball and was fouled in the process. She converted on the ensuing free position to give the Terps the 9-8 edge.
Senior goalie Allie Buote came up with a huge stop with time winding down as she saved a Duke free position opportunity. The Terps were able to kill the clock following the save to take the one-goal lead into the locker room.
The second half was as tight as the first as neither team accumulated a lead of more than two goals. Davis tied the game with the first goal in the second half when she connected on the break after a Terps' turnover.
Buote saved another free position a couple of minutes later and the Terps followed through with a goal on its next possession when sophomore Amanda Spinnenweber scored off a dish from Magor to give Maryland the lead back at 10-9 four minutes into the second frame.
Allie Johnson got the goal back for Duke and the Blue Devils won the ensuing draw, but Maryland's defense stood strong for four minutes to keep Duke from taking the lead. Dobbie gave the Terps another lead at 11-10 when she scored a spectacular goal, cutting across the fan from right to left and surprising the goalie with a behind-the-back shot.
After Davis converted on a free position to tie the score at 11-11, the Terps scored two-straight goals to take the only multiple goal lead of the half with 12:23 left in the game. Cohen used a pass from Dobbie for the first score and then sophomore Karissa Taylor won the ensuing draw and brought into the offensive third.
Freshman Sarah Mollison handled the ball on the right side of the goal and found a streaking Cohen with a nice pass to give the Terps the 13-11 lead.
Duke did not let up and went on a game-ending three-goal run to steal the win away from the Terps. The Blue Devils won the ensuing draw after the last Maryland goal and scored immediately as Megan Del Monte found the back of the net off of a dish from Hamm.
Buote came up with another big save to keep the lead intact and her counterpart, Kim Imbesi did the same with 5:15 to go. Duke could not clear the ball out of Maryland's offensive third though as Dobbie forced a turnover and kept the Terps on attack.
As Maryland was working the offense and trying to kill off some of the clock, it turned the ball over and Duke took possession. The Blue Devils made the most of the mistake and scored the game-tying goal with 1:29 left in the game.
Dobbie won the ensuing draw to give the Terps possession in the last minute, but the Duke defense forced another turnover and gained possession of the ball. Maryland was whistled for a foul with 13 seconds left and Duke was awarded a free position, but Sarah Bullard's shot was blocked.
Adam gained possession of the ball and scored with just three seconds remaining, her only point of the game, to give Duke the come-from-behind victory.
Duke (5-0, 1-0 ACC) was led by Davis who scored six goals and added an assist. Del Monte and Johnson added a pair of goals apiece and Hamm had a goal and two assists.
The Terps (2-1, 1-1 ACC) will host No. 2 Virginia on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The game will be televised nationally on CSTV.
