COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland baseball team plays host to the No. 3 North Carolina Tar Heels in a three-game series at Shipley Field this weekend.
The Terps (10-9, 1-5 ACC) are coming off a pair of non-conference road wins this week at Old Dominion and William & Mary, respectively. The Tar Heels (16-3, 5-1 ACC) have won six straight games and eight of nine. The Heels, the preseason favorite to win the Atlantic Coast Conference's Coastal Division, are currently tied with Miami for first place.
Scott Swinson (Ellicott City, Md./George Washington University) will face preseason all-American Alex White at 7 p.m. Friday. Last Friday at Wake Forest, Swinson tossed the school's first complete game since 2004. Swinson is 2-2 with a 4.85 ERA while White is 3-1 with a 2.37 ERA.
Ian Schwalenberg (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) will face Adam Warren at 4 p.m. Saturday and Jensen Pupa (Germantown, Md./Northwest) matches up with Matt Harvey at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Maryland third baseman Mike Murphy (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Prep) comes into the series on a hitting tear, blasting three home runs in the last two games with five on the season overall. The Terps have hit 22 homers this season, well on pace to surpass last season's mark of 34.
North Carolina has advanced to the College World Series' championship round the last two seasons, falling to Oregon State both times. The Tar Heels boast three preseason all-Americans on their roster: White, Tim Federowicz and Dustin Ackley. Federowicz is also a candidate for the Johnny Bench Award. The Heels' team ERA of 2.29 is second-best in the ACC.
The Tar Heels lead the all-time series, 116-46. Maryland's last win in the series came March 17, 2006. The Terps' last series win against North Carolina came in 2001.
All three games will be broadcast live on the Internet at WMUCSports.com.
