COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Bill Rice, Chad Durakis and Gerry Spessard combined for six hits and five runs to lead the University of Maryland baseball team to a 12-2 non-conference victory over Coppin State Wednesday.
The Terps (5-4) scored two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to break open a 5-2 game.
Right fielder A.J. Casario had an RBI single in the fifth. Spessard, who was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, singled home a run and later scored during the sixth-inning rally off reliever Nate Kellar who surrendered four hits and two earned runs in his two innings of work.
Rice, who was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, and Spessard each crossed the plate during a four-run first inning against starter Darrell Downs (0-2), who suffered the loss. Downs surrendered seven hits and four earned runs over five innings of work.
The Terps, who pounded out 11 hits, were aided by seven Coppin State (0-9) errors, which led to five unearned runs.
Mike Sufczynski (1-1), one of eight Maryland pitchers, tossed a scoreless inning for the win. Matt Quinn had the longest stint for the Terps, pitching a scoreless fifth and sixth.
Catcher Oscar Santolo had three of the Eagles' seven hits.
Maryland, which has won four of five games, opens Atlantic Coast Conference play this weekend. The Terps face Florida State in Tallahassee in a three-game series beginning Friday.
