Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman Eric Potter struck out 12 batters in six innings of work and the Maryland pitching staff combined to fan 18 batters as the Terrapins shut out the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 6-0, Tuesday night at Shipley Field.

Potter (Odenton, Md./Arundel) struck out the most batters by a Terrapin pitcher since Chris Clem struck out 15 against Buffalo in 2004. The 18 team strikeouts were the most since fanning 17 April 23, 2003 against James Madison.

With the win, the Terps (27-24) broke their five-game losing streak and completed a season sweep of the Hawks (5-45).

After a scoreless top of the first, the Terps' bats gave Potter some early run support with a three-run inning.

After a botched double play that could have ended the inning without any runs scoring, Will Greenberg (Gaithersburg, Md./Washington College) drove in a run with an RBI single to left field and catcher Chad Durakis (Cockeysville, Md./St. Paul's) delivered a two-run double down the left field line. It was Durakis' 16th double of the season, a team high.

Buoyed by the early run support, Potter attacked the strike zone and at one time fanned five straight hitters.

Maryland added single runs in the third, fifth and six innings.

Designated hitter Jensen Pupa (Germantown, Md./Northwest) had an RBI double in the third, third baseman Mike Murphy (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Prep) added an RBI single in the fifth and right fielder AJ Casario hit a solo home run in the sixth, his seventh of the year.

Potter got the win, improving to 2-0 this season. Potter allowed no runs on two hits with 12 strikeouts and three walks in six innings.

Matt Whitte took the loss for UMES, falling to 1-7. Witte allowed six runs, five earned, on 11 hits in seven innings.

Freshman Blair Delean (Falls Church, Va./George C. Marshall) struck out three batters in two innings of relief, allowing only one hit.

Freshman Brett Harman (Westminster, Md./Westminster) pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out all three batters he faced.

Pupa, Murphy and Casario each had three hits in the game.

Video of the game is available online at ACCSelect.com.

Maryland plays host to Towson at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Terps will be looking to avoid a season sweep at the hands of the Tigers, as Towson won the first two matchups this season, 11-6 and 12-3.
