The Maryland swimming and diving team had several solid performances Friday in its first action in 2009.
On the women's side, Alisa Kurbatova captured the 1-meter diving (276.40) to kick off competition. Other first place finishes on the day included Jen Vogel in the 100 fly (55.28) and Ginny Glover in the 100 backstroke (56.92). The Maryland relays hit a pair of second place finishes as the team of Ginny Glover, Nina Rossi, Jen Vogel and Annie Fittin competed in the 200 medley and Fittin, Vogel, Laura Wright and Jackie Davidson swam the 200 free. The women lead Pittsburgh and Villanova, but trail Penn State heading into tomorrow's finale.
For the men, Mitch Challacombe had a fine day in the pool, registering a third place finish in the 100 back (50.96) and was a member of the second place 200 medley relay (1:31.39). Challacombe was joined by Eric Cullen, Aleksander Damjanic and Andy Dilz on that squad. Cullen continued his dominance in the 100 breast, winning the event (57.10). Dilz also picked up a first-place finish in the 100 free (45.63). The Terrapin men lead Pitt but are behind Penn State after day one.
Competition resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Eppley Recreation Natatorium.
