Jen Vogel and Alisa Kurbatova each won a pair of events but the Maryland women's swimming and diving team fell to North Carolina, 166-117, on Friday afternoon.
Vogel captured the 100 fly (55.43) and the 200 IM (2:04.97) while Kurbatova led the Terps on the board, winning both the 1-meter (269.85) and 3-meter (297.75) dive. Maryland set a tone with its first event of the day as Annie Fittin (56.83), Megan Lafferty (57.05) and Jackie Davidson (57.43) went 1, 2, 3 in the 100 back. Fittin also finished second in the 50 free (23.57).
Freshman Kim Larson led the way in the distance events, taking third in the 1000 free (10:29.07). Sophomore Ginny Glover won the 200 back (2:01.40) and finished third in the 200 free (1:51.83). Freshman Katie Hughes had one of her finest swims of her young Maryland career with a third-place finish in the 200 back (2:03.83).
Maryland's seniors stepped up as well as Patty DeScenza finished third in the 200 fly (2:04.49) and Laura Wright took second in the 100 free (51.90).
"We swam very well...our goal was to inspire each other and raise the level," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "I thought we really came out on fire with the 1, 2, 3 finish in the 200 back. I was proud of preparation."
Maryland returns home for a dual meet versus intrastate rivals Towson and UMBC next Friday.
