COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Third baseman Mike Murphy tied a career high with four RBIs and starting pitcher Brett Harman overcame some first-inning struggles to lead the University of Maryland baseball team to an 8-3 victory Wednesday evening against Old Dominion.
After losing at Old Dominion the night before, the Terps won the back end of the midweek home-and-home to improve to 7-0 at home this season and 9-9, overall.
The Monarchs (5-11) jumped on Harman right away. Center fielder Max Most led off the game with a home run to center field and Donnie Corsner added an RBI single later in the inning to put the Monarchs up 2-0. However, Harman retired the next two batters to escape further damage and settled down from that point.
Old Dominion's lead did not last long. Following a leadoff walk, second baseman David Poutier delivered his first of three hits on the night, a double into the right-center field gap off Old Dominion starter Phil McCarthy. Murphy plated A.J. Casario with a sacrifice fly for his first RBI of the night.
The Terps tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the second on another sacrifice fly, this one off the bat of shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez.
Murphy and Poutier delivered again in the bottom of the fourth, helping the Terps pull away from the Monarchs and build a working margin. Poutier drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single up the middle, chasing McCarthy from the game and putting the Terps up 4-2. Two batters later, Murphy drove a two-run double into the left-center field gap off reliever Cory Toth, doubling Maryland's lead at 6-2.
Murphy drove in his fourth run in the bottom of the sixth on a single to right field.
Harman was dominant on the mound after the first inning, shutting out the Monarchs the next 5 1/3 innings. Harman struck out a career-high nine batters and didn't walk anyone as he earned the victory to improve to 2-2.
Old Dominion's third and final run came on a Corsner solo home run off Maryland relief pitcher Kyle Blackwell.
McCarthy was the losing pitcher for the Monarchs, allowing five earned runs in 3 1/3 innings with four walks.
First baseman Curtis Lazar had two hits for the second straight game against the Monarchs. Maryland reliever Dan Gentzler tossed the final 1 1/3 inning for the Terps and struck out all four batters he retired.
Most led Old Dominion, delivering three hits. Corsner had two hits for the Monarchs.
The Terps return to conference play this weekend when Boston College visits Shipley Field for a three-game series, including Saturday afternoon's televised game on Raycom.
