Coleman Wins Third Straight ACC Player of the Week Award
GREENSBORO, N.C. - After leading the Terrapins to their first conference championship in 20 years, Maryland's Marissa Coleman and Kristi Toliver were named to the 2009 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball First Team, the league office announced today.
Toliver, the only repeat first-team selection from last season, joins fellow senior Coleman, a first-team pick after three straight seasons of second-team selections, on the All-ACC team with Virginia's Lyndra Littles and Monica Wright and Duke's Chante Black.
Toliver, the Terps' point guard, ranks second among ACC scorers with 18.1 points per game and leads all conference players in assists with 5.1 per contest. The Harrisonburg, Va., native also ranks second in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage and is No. 1 among active NCAA players with 284 career treys, sinking a league-high 75 3-pointers this season (second-most in Maryland single-season history).
The Feb. 9 ACC Player of the Week, Toliver's 1.5 assist/turnover ratio is second-best in the ACC and her 82.2 free-throw percentage ranks fourth. Her all-conference nod gives her three career All-ACC team selections (first team in 2008, third team in 2007).
Coleman proved to be one of the most versatile players in the ACC this season, ranking in the top-15 in nine of 10 major statistical categories. Within league play, she ranked third in scoring (20.1 ppg) and field goal percentage (52.7 pct), 8th in assists (3.7 apg), t-11th in rebounding (7.3 rpg), fifth in free throw percentage (82.1 pct), sixth in 3-point percentage (40.9 pct), t-13th in steals (2.1 spg), 14th in 3-point field goals made (1.3/game) and sixth in assist/turnover ratio (1.2).
The Cheltenham, Md., native upped her 14.4 scoring average in non-conference play to 20.1 points per game in conference action for a 17.1 overall average (4th in ACC). She was especially lethal down the stretch, scoring 22 points per game during the Terps' current nine-game win streak which helped them to their first ACC championship since 1989.
Coleman also reached several career milestones, becoming just the eighth player in ACC history to eclipse 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career. She is a four-time ACC Player of the Week this season, including the last three weeks of the regular season.
The duo had their numbers raised to the Comcast Center rafters on Senior Night last week, joining their three other starting teammates from the 2006 national championship team. They are also the winningest class in Maryland history, with a current mark of 120-18.
"Marissa and Kristi are a coach's dream and we're incredibly proud," Maryland head coach Brenda Frese said. "They will be the first to tell you that individual accomplishments don't happen without great teammates."
Coleman, Toliver and their seven teammates will open play in the ACC Tournament on Friday in Greensboro, N.C. versus the winner of Thursday's Wake Forest-NC State game. Tip-off from Greensboro Coliseum is slated for 3 p.m. and will be televised on RSN.
