CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
Will Greenberg had three hits for the Terrapins, but No. 1 North Carolina scored six runs in the fifth inning to turn an apparent pitcher's duel into a comfortable victory as the University of Maryland baseball team dropped the second game of a three-game set Saturday evening at Boshamer Stadium, 14-3.
For the second straight game, the Tar Heels (34-11, 15-7 ACC) came through with a big two-out hit to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Catcher Mark Fleury, who hit a three-run home run in Friday's game, ripped a two-run double down the right-field line against Maryland starting pitcher Matt Fullerton to get North Carolina on the board early.
After a couple quiet innings, North Carolina plated its third run in the bottom of the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Mike Cavasinni and Ryan Norton.
Freshman catcher Tyler Bennett got the Terps (20-23, 6-17 ACC) on the board in the top of the fifth inning, lining an 0-2 pitch from Adam Warren into center field to plate David Poutier with two outs.
The Tar Heels erased Bennett's run-scoring single in the bottom of the fifth. Second baseman Levi Michael led off with a triple to center field off relief pitcher Adam Kolarek and Dustin Ackley followed with a single to left to give North Carolina a 4-1 lead. The Heels didn't stop there, though. Fleury continued his hot series against the Terps, driving in two more runs with a triple down the right-field line. Three more runs scored on a Ben Bunting infield single sandwiched between a pair of sacrifice flies, as the Tar Heels scored six runs in the inning to take a 9-1 lead.
The Terps threatened to get back in the game in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with no outs. However, the Terps were limited to only an A.J. Casario sacrifice fly as Warren struck out the final two batters of the inning.
Ackley ripped a two-run homer off Blair Delean and pinch hitter Seth Baldwin added a three-run shot in the bottom of the eighth to put the Tar Heels up 14-2.
Greenberg added an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, his third hit of the night, to account for the final margin of 14-3.
Warren earned the win, allowing two runs on four hits in six innings to improve to 5-2. Fullerton took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in four innings to fall to 5-4. Logan Munson pitched three innings to earn his second save.
Michael led the Tar Heels with four hits while Fleury drove in four of the team's runs.
The Terps and Tar Heels play the final game of the series at 1 p.m. Sunday. The game will be broadcast online via ACC Select.
