Sanford and Belzunce Lead Terps at Regionals

NORFOLK, Va. - Maryland newcomers Jordaan Sanford and Ana Belzunce led the Terps at the ITA Regionals, teaming up to advance to the quarterfinals of the women's open doubles.

The pair, seeded ninth, got a first round bye before slipping by Georgetown's Madeline Jaeger and Vicky Sekeley 8-4 in the round of 32. Sanford and Belzunce then knocked off Virginia Tech's eighth seeded Shannon Betts and Martha Blakely 8-6 to reach the quarterfinals, before falling 8-2 to third seeded Michaela Kissel and Dominika Zaprazna of Marshall.

Sanford also reached the round of 16 in singles before falling to Blakely in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. She toppled Georgetown's Lauren Greco 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round, and UMBC's Kim Berghaus 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the round of 32 to face Blakely.

Terp upperclassmen Julia Huschke and Jordan Hansbrough also teamed up to reach the round of 16. After a first round bye, the duo beat Penn State's Marie Bedard and Fernanda Perrotta 8-6 eventually falling 8-6 to fifth seeded Yasmin Hamza and Holly Johnson of Virginia Tech.

The Terps wrap up the fall season at the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. beginning Nov. 5.
