BLACKSBURG, Va. -
Virginia Tech twice overcame one-run deficits and scored the game's final five runs to defeat Maryland 8-4 on Sunday and claim a series victory.
The Terps held a 4-3 lead after scoring three runs in the seventh thanks to an RBI squeeze-bunt single by Jack Cleary and a two-RBI single by Alfredo Rodriguez. But the Hokies answered with three of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead.
Tech's Buddy Sosnoskie reached on a two-out bunt single and scored on a double by Mike Kaminski to tie the game at 4-4. After Steve Domecus was hit by a pitch, Sean Ryan tripled to score Kaminski and Domecus, giving the Hokies a 6-4 lead.
The Hokies (11-4, 2-1 ACC) added two insurance runs in the eighth to bring the final score to 8-4.
Maryland (6-8, 1-2 ACC) scored the game's first run in the second inning. Third baseman Matthew Murakami hit a two-out double and stole third base before scoring on an RBI single by designated hitter Jon Wilson.
Murakami, Wilson and first baseman Dan Gentzler each had two-hit days to lead the Terps offensively.
Relief pitcher Ian Schwalenberg (1-2), who gave up three runs in the seventh on three hits, took the loss.
Virginia Tech starter Matthew Price (2-1) went eight innings, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out six in the win.
The Terps host Old Dominion on Tuesday at 4 p.m., then travel to Williamsburg, Va., to face William & Mary at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
