WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -
The University of Maryland baseball team received three-hit performances from Dan Gentzler and Mike Rozak and totaled 13 hits as a team, but was unable to convert the offense into runs, falling to William & Mary 5-2 Wednesday.
Alfredo Rodriguez homered in the first inning to give Maryland an early lead, but the Tribe responded with two runs in both the first and second innings to take a 4-1 lead.
The Tribe's Ryan Brown and Tadd Bower singled in the bottom of the first, and Brown scored on another single by Stephen Arcure to tie the game at 1-1. After a walk to Ryan Williams, Chris Jensen was hit by a pitch, giving William & Mary a 2-1 lead.
Bower's RBI double in the second gave the Tribe a 3-1 lead, and they tacked on one more when a groundout allowed Derrick Osteen to score.
In addition to Gentzler and Rozak's three hits, David Poutier, Alfredo Rodriguez and Brandon Padula each had two-hit days to lead Maryland (7-9).
Eric Potter (1-3) took the loss in 2 2/3 innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits. Blair Delean and John Dischert pitched effectively for 5 1/3, but the Terps were unable to mount a rally. In 3 1/3, Dischert allowed just one hit while striking out seven, matching a career-high.
Tribe reliever Matt Davenport (3-0) earned the win for William & Mary (10-6), pitching 5 2/3 without giving up a run.
The Terps got within two runs in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Poutier, but the Tribe answered with a run in the fifth to complete the scoring.
Maryland plays host to Georgia Tech this weekend in its Atlantic Coast Conference home opener. The Terps and Yellow Jackets play at 6 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
