WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The 2010 outdoor track and field season began with strong performances from the men's and women's programs this Saturday. Seven Maryland women placed first in their events.

Maryland's female student-athletes dominated the first 3,000-meter run of the outdoor season. Christina Nelson took first place with a mark of 10:02.46, followed by Ashley Campbell, Ashley Cromartie and Julie Fricke in second through fourth. Nelson's first place mark is ninth all-time at Maryland. Halsey Sinclair placed tenth in the long run.

Ashlyn Sinclair took first place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a mark of 11:22.21. Sinclair's mark is fifth all-time in Maryland history.

Tolulope Olugbemi won the 200 with a mark of 25.03. The senior also shined in the 100, earning second place with a time of 12.51 seconds.

Julie Fricke posted a second place finish in the 800 with a mark of 2:18.87. Halsey Sinclair followed in the fifth place at 2:22.69.

In the field, Terrapin women won four events. In the javelin throw, Tara Miluszewski took first place with a throw of 111-05.50. Tiffani Long won the long jump with a mark of 18.02.50. Kristen Batts and Jessie Echard led all competitors in the first discus and hammer throws of the season. Batts threw the discus 147-11.50 feet, and Echard thew the hammer 158-05.50 feet.

Newcomer Betsy Dempsey jumped 5-03 in high jump, earning the freshman third place in the competition. Lucile Cancre and Camilla Nichols placed fourth and ninth.

The only first place finish for the men's program came from Chris Parker in the 110-meter hurdles. The sophomore ran the event in 15.58 seconds.

In the 200, Floyd Hawkes and John Davenport took third and fourth place with marks of 22.10 and 22.36 respectively. Dareem David followed in sixth at 22.52.

In the 400-meter dash, Shawn David, Tommy Friscia and Chris Brown placed second, third and fourth, with marks of 49.92, 49.99 and 50.06.

Ben Diestel ran 800 meters in 1:55.08, earning the senior second place. Sumanth Kuppalli took fifth place in the event at 1:57.64, with Craig Morgan following one hundredth of a second later in sixth place.

The Maryland 4x400-meter relay team took second place this Saturday. Chris Brown, Max Bruno, Shawn David and Tommy Friscia ran the event in 3:20.01 seconds. Ben Diestel, Sumanth Kuppalli, Craig Morgan and Joshua Finkle placed fifth in the relay at 3:34.55.

Sam Wuest jumped 6-02.50 meters in the high jump, earning the freshman second place. In the long jump, John Davenport took fourth place with a jump of 21-50.

Maryland Notes:

Women's:

In the 100, Tiffani Long placed ninth at 13.11 and Raven Wingate placed tenth at 13.16. In the 200, Wingate placed thirteenth with a mark of 27.17.

In the 800, Ashley Cromartie took sixth place at 2:23.93, Ashley Campbell took eighth place at 2:25.66, Ashlyn Sinclair took ninth place at 2:26.80, Anna Roth took twelfth place at 2:30.16, Andrea Rothschild took fourteenth place at 2:31.17, and Danielle Karagannis took sixteenth place at 2:37.83.

In the 1,500, Andrea Rothschild took ninth place at 4:58.14, Danielle Karagannis took tenth place at 5:01.50, Christy Goldmann took eleventh place at 5:05.79, and Anna Roth took twelfth place at 5:08.45.

In the 4x400, Natalie Goodman, Tolulope Olugbemi, Arielle Statham and Kelley Pry placed fifth with a time of 4:08.53.

In the javelin throw, Alexandra Georgiou placed third with a throw of 87-11.00.

In the hammer throw, Moriah Young took fourth place with a throw of 150-04.25. Young earned fourth place in the shot put with a throw of 42-10.50.

In the discus throw, Jessie Echard placed eighth with a throw of 120-00.25, and Alexandra Georgiou placed fourteenth with a throw of 103.03.75.

Men's:

In the 200, Chris Parker placed fifteenth with a mark of 23.83.

In the 800, five Terrapins finished ninth through thirteenth: Calvin Wheeler at 2:00.12, Jeff Dickson at 2:00.78, Alex Lundy at 2:01.80, Joshua Finkle at 2:04.10, and Drew Abernathy at 2:06.60.

In the 1,500, Alex Lundy, Joshua Finkle and Drew Abernathy placed sixth through eighth with marks of 4:00.23, 4:08.58 and 4:13.25.

NOTE: The men's javelin was originally scheduled, but not competed. The timing camera malfunctioned during the men's 5,000-meter run, and since the winner did not come through until well over IC4A qualifying time, the general consensus among coaches, officials, and timers was to ignore it.
