LYNCHBURG, Va. -
Michael Robertson hit a three-run home run in the first inning to give Liberty an early lead and Cameron Giannini struck out 10 in seven innings as the Flames defeated Maryland 11-1 Wednesday afternoon.
Liberty scored a total of four runs in the first inning and tacked on five more in the fifth. Three of the fifth-inning runs came on a two-out, bases loaded bloop single by Kenneth Negron that dropped between second baseman David Poutier and center fielder Matt Marquis.
Giannini (4-3) gave up just one run on seven hits to earn the win.
The Terps had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning with three straight hits by the top of the lineup. Alfredo Rodriguez led off with a double and was knocked in by Zach Fisher's single. Gary Schneider followed with a single of his own, but was stranded on base along with Fisher.
Schneider had his fifth straight multiple-hit game to lead the Terps offensively, but Maryland was unable to score after the first inning.
Eric Potter (2-9) allowed four runs in the first and only inning of his day and took the loss.
The win was the fifth straight for Liberty, which improved to 33-12 on the season. Maryland dropped to 16-34.
The Terps return home for a three-game series with Clemson this weekend. Maryland's seniors will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday and will be honored prior to the game.
