The Maryland women's tennis team wrapped up the first weekend of the 2010 fall season at the William & Mary Invite with a Flight E singles title for sophomore
Burce Kurkan.
No. 3 seeded Kurkan won the Flight E singles title with a straight set 6-3, 6-3 win over Old Dominion's Nika Khmolovska. After a first-round bye, Kurkan easily handled ODU's Melissa Esnel 6-3, 6-3. Then in a hotly contested third round match, Kurkan defeated No. 1 seeded Manuela Pietzuch from Virginia Commonwealth 7-5, 7-5 (6) to face Khmolovska for the title.
Overall, Kurkan went 5-0, with three singles victories, and two more doubles wins paired with singles' foe Pietzuch.
The tournament is a strong start for the sophomore from Turkey. Kurkan played predominantly at No. 6 singles last year for the Terps, and is one of only three Terps who played regularly last season.
Jordan Hansbrough and Julia Huschke are the other two Terps who saw significant action last season. After an 8-2 loss to the No. 2 seed in the Flight A doubles bracket, Hansbrough and Huschke teamed up to win three straight and win the Flight A doubles consolation bracket with an 8-4 win over William & Mary's Hope Johnson and Katie Kargl.
Maryland went 9-6 total during the three-day tournament led by Kurkan's five wins.
