COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Mary Cushman finished with 16 kills and freshman Adreene Elliott added 12 for the Maryland (9-8, 3-2 ACC) volleyball team, but it was not enough as Virginia Tech defeated the Terps 3-2 (22-25, 25-27, 25-22, 25-16, 15-10) Sunday afternoon.

For Elliott, it is the sixth straight match she recorded eight or more kills. The Winston-Salem native also added seven blocks. Junior Remy McBain tallied 46 assists to go along with seven kills and nine digs. With the 55 assists McBain recorded Friday against Virginia, the junior is 10 shy of passing Libby Alberts for fifth all-time at Maryland.

Maryland led 10-4 early in the first set following an Elliott kill. The Hokies chipped away at the Maryland lead and eventually pulled within two points at 23-21 following a service ace by Erin Leaser. A Virginia Tech error would give the Terps set point and junior Caitlin Adams closed it with a kill.

In the second set, Virginia Tech used a four point run to take a 16-8 lead. The Hokies maintained the lead and looked to be in control of the set at 24-20. However, the Terps fought off four consecutive match points to even the set. The Hokies gained a fifth set point after a kill by Cara Baarendse, but a McBain kill evened the set at 25. The Terrapins would win the set after a Virginia Tech error tied the score and Elliott intercepted an errant Hokie dig to finish the set with a kill.

The third set was tight throughout with neither team gaining an advantage larger than four points. With the score tied at 21, the Hokies scored three consecutive points and a Jennifer Wiker kill gave the set to Virginia Tech, 25-22.

Virginia Tech gained control of the fourth set with a four point run to stretch its advantage to 19-13. The Terps cut the lead to 21-16, but Virginia Tech scored the final four points of the set to force a fifth set.

In the fifth set, Virginia Tech broke a 5-5 tie with another four point run. The Terps pulled within one point at 10-9, but would not get closer as the Hokies scored five of the final six points of the match.
