COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Junior Remy McBain tallied her eighth double-double of the season and freshman Adreene Elliott led the Terps with 11 kills, but it was not enough as #19 Miami defeated Maryland 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-13, 25-23) Sunday afternoon.
McBain had 34 assists, 10 digs and nine kills falling one short of recording a triple-double. Elliott finished with a .526 hitting percentage the second-highest total of her career. Junior Caitlin Adams added 10 kills and senior Maddi Lee and sophomore Mary Cushman chipped in with nine each in the losing effort. Sophomore Sarah Harper finished with 25 digs tying her second-highest total of the season.
The first set featured 14 ties and lead changes. With the Hurricanes leading 17-15, McBain converted on a quick strike off of a dig from freshman Katie Kelley to cut the Miami lead to one point. Miami's Ali Becker answered with two kills of her own as part of a three-point Hurricane run to stretch the lead to four points as Miami went on to take the set 25-20.
After Miami cut the Maryland lead to two points midway through the second set, Lee responded with back-to-back kills to give the Terps a 15-11 lead. The Hurricanes battled back to tie the set at 21 before Adams put the Terps up for good with a kill. Maryland won the set 25-22.
Miami scored five of the first seven points in the third set and never relinquished the lead. The Hurricanes pushed their lead to eight points at 13-5 and eventually won the set 25-13.
The Terps started strong in the fourth set. Consecutive service aces by Harper gave Maryland a 9-1 advantage. Harper recorded three service aces as part of the set opening run. However, the Hurricanes slowly cut into the deficit and tied the fourth set at 20. Following a Maryland timeout, Miami's Emani Sims put the Hurricanes in front for good.
