Junior Remy McBain recorded her fourth triple-double of the season and redshirt freshman Carlisle Abele had a career-high 11 kills, but Clemson defeated the Terps 3-1 (18-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-22) Friday night at Comcast Pavilion. Maryland (9-17, 3-11 ACC) will be back in action at Comcast Pavilion Sunday at 2 p.m. against Georgia Tech.
Among the noteworthy performances, sophomore Mary Cushman tallied a career-high 19 kills including eight in the match's opening set. Senior Maddi Lee had a season-high 16 kills. McBain finished with 10 kills, 48 assists and 12 digs. Abele turned in a career effort with 11 kills.
The Terps opened the first set by scoring seven of the first 10 points and would extend their lead to eight at 16-8. After consecutive Clemson points, Lee sparked a three-point run and Cushman finished it with consecutive kills to increase the Maryland lead to 20-12. The Tigers cut the Maryland lead to four points at 21-17 after a kill from Sandra Adeleye. Cushman answered with a kill and the Terps went on to win the set 25-18.
The second set featured 14 ties and lead changes with neither team gaining an advantage larger than one point until the Terps led 10-8. Clemson tied the match three times before taking the lead at 18-17. After a kill from Abele tied the set at 19, Clemson's Hannah Brenner and Serenat Yaz recorded consecutive kills to give the Tigers the lead. With the Terps facing set point at 24-20, junior Caitlin Adams added one of her eight kills to keep the set alive. Clemson called timeout and the Tigers closed out the set following a Maryland error.
Clemson led for most of the third set. Facing set point at 24-20, Lee tallied one of her six kills in the set and sophomore Caroline Niski added a service ace to force the Tigers to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, Clemson's Natalie Patzin set up Hannah Brenner to clinch the set.
In the fourth set, a kill by Cushman cut the Clemson lead to one point at 9-8. The Tigers responded with three consecutive points and did not allow the Terps to get closer than four until consecutive kills by Adams and freshman Adreene Elliott cut the lead to 21-18 and forced Clemson to call a timeout. After the timeout, the Tigers committed an error and Lee followed with a kill to pull the Terps to within in one point. However, back-to-back Maryland errors increased Clemson's lead to three and the Tigers held on to win the set 25-22.
