Freshman Amina Smith continued her streak of first-place finishes, while Greg Kelsey ran a career-best time in the men's 3,000 meters to highlight Maryland performances Saturday at the NYRR Saturday Night at the Armory II indoor track and field meet.
Individual victories by Smith (women's high jump) and DeAnna Brown (60-meter dash) helped the Maryland women to fourth place in the team standings with 81 points. Columbia scored 166.5 to win the meet, with Virginia in second at 110.
Smith has not been beaten so far this year indoors. She went 5 feet, 10 inches on Saturday to win for the fifth straight time and hit 5-10 for the third time this year.
Brown went 7.48 to win the 60 meters, posting a career-best mark that moved her up one spot to third on Maryland's all-time list. She led a 1-2-3 finish, as D'Ambour Lewis (7.60) and Heidi Paul (7.69) also aided the Terrapin sweep. Paul's time was a career-best and moved her into 10th all-time.
Brown also finished second in the 200 for Maryland, cutting nearly a half-second off her previous PR. Her mark of 24.30 moves her into third on Maryland's all-time list.
Sophomore thrower Moriah Young contributed 13 points to the Terrapin effort on Saturday, posting a career-best 58-2.50 in the 20-pound weight throw to move into fifth all-time at Maryland and finish second on Saturday. She also was fourth in the shot put (44-5.25).
Kristen Batts went 58-1.75 for third in the weight throw, just a quarter-inch off her career-best, while Jessie Echard was eighth at 53-4.25.
Kelsey continued his strong performances in the 2010-11 season. Already an All-ACC performer in cross country, Kelsey ran 8:15.75 to place second in the men's 3,000 to cut four seconds off his previous career-best. He now ranks fourth all-time at Maryland.
Sumanth Kuppalli finished seventh in the men's 800 at 1:53.18 to move into sixth all-time at Maryland. Chris Brown went 49.85 in the men's 400 for a seventh-place finish and 10th position on the Terps' all-time list.
Freshman thrower Josh Haghighi scored 14 of Maryland's points in the meet, placing second in the shot put (52-3.25) and third in the 35-pound weight throw (53-6.50). Chris Nash posted a season-best 50-9.25 to place fifth in the weight throw.
The Maryland men scored 32 points to finish ninth in the team standings. Virginia scored 98.5 team points, with Army in second at 89.
Maryland is now off until the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships in two weeks.
NOTES
* Kiani Profit matched her career-best in the 400 meters at 54.21. The time was a qualifying mark for the ECAC Indoor meet, meaning Maryland's All-American multi-event star has qualified for the ECAC meet in five different events.
* Ashley Cromartie was seventh in the women's mile , with her time of 5:02.80 being Maryland's best of the season in that event.
* Maryam Fikri was 11th overall in the women's mile, but won her heat in 5:08.14, cutting 11 seconds off her season-best.
* Ashlyn Sinclair ran 10:21.96 in the women's 3,000, cutting 16 seconds off her previous season-best.
* Craig Morgan went 1:54.56 to earn a season-best in the men's 800.
* Floyd Hawkes had season-bests in both the 60 (7.13) and 200 (7th overall in 22.55).
