COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Maryland broke a 2-2 tie with a five-run sixth inning and Terrapin pitching didn't allow a run over the final five innings as the Terps beat George Washington 8-2 Tuesday night.
The Terps stole five bases against the Colonials, including three that proved to be crucial in the decisive sixth inning. Kyle Convissar drew a walk, got into scoring position by swiping second and broke the 2-2 tie when he scored on Korey Wacker's single to left field.
After a passed ball and an infield single by Matt Marquis gave Maryland (11-10) runners on the corners, Marquis stole second and as George Washington catcher Jimmy Best attempted to throw Marquis out, Wacker safely sprinted home for a 4-2 lead.
Pinch-hitter Brandon Padula walked and freshman outfielder Charlie White followed with a double down the right-field line to knock in Marquis and give Maryland two runners in scoring position. Two batters later and with two outs in the inning, Ryan Holland hit a grounder between first and second base; GW first baseman Jordan Berry made a play on it, but by the time he could flip to pitcher Colin Milon, who was covering at first, Holland had dove safely into first and two more runs had come around to score for a 7-2 lead.
Brady Kirkpatrick (1-1) struck out five in two innings of relief to earn his first collegiate win. The freshman has 23 strikeouts in only 16 innings of work this season. Chuck Ghysels, Jimmy Reed and Blair Delean also made relief appearances in keeping the Colonials scoreless over the final five innings.
George Washington (6-15) reliever Aaron Weisberg (0-2) took the loss after allowing three runs on two hits and a walk in 1/3 of an inning.
Maryland added an insurance run in the seventh inning on Kyle Convissar's RBI single through the left side that scored Tomo Delp.
The Terps play host to St. John's Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the final game of a seven-game homestand. Admission is free.
