DURHAM, N.C. - Dwight Barbiasz gave the University of Maryland its second individual champion in as many days by winning the men's high jump Friday at the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Duke University.

Barbiasz cleared 6 feet, 11 1/2 inches to win the outdoor title in difficult weather conditions. He was the only student-athlete in the field of 18 competitors to clear the final height. Barbiasz also won the indoor title in the high jump this February and went on to earn All-America status indoors at the NCAA Indoor Nationals.

The victory in the conference meet was the third for Barbiasz during his time at Maryland. He also won the indoor title as a freshman in 2009. He is the first Terrapin to repeat as the league champion in the high jump since Mike Pascuzzo won in 1983 and 1984.

Sophomore transfer Jon Hill finished fourth on Friday in the high jump as one of six jumpers to clear 6-9 1/2. Hill earned fourth based on fewer misses through the competition, which lasted for only four heights.

Also for the Maryland men, freshman Josh Haghighi earned seventh in the shot put with a season-best mark of 53-4 1/4. After two fouls, Haghighi earned a spot in the shot finals on his third attempt at 50-11 1/2. He then moved up to seventh in the fifth round with his best mark of the competition.

With the 15 points from the high jump and Haghighi's two in the shot put, Maryland finished the second of three days of competition in eighth place in the men's team standings with 17 points. Host Duke continued to lead after eight of 20 events with 70.5 points, with Florida State second at 51 and Virginia Tech third with 46.5.

On the women's side, sophomore Moriah Young scored for Maryland with an eighth-place finish in the shot put. Young went more than a foot past her career-best to post a mark of 48-3 1/4. She moved into third place on Maryland's all-time list in the event outdoors.

Young moved from 11th to seventh in the first two rounds before uncorking her best in the third round and easily moving into the finals.

Combined with Kristen Batts' 10 points for Thursday's victory in the discus, Young's finish gave the Terps 11 team points and a spot in ninth in the women's team standings. Clemson took over the lead after seven events with 66.5 points, followed by Duke with 45 and Florida State with 36.

Also on Friday, Maryland junior DeAnna Brown earned a spot in the women's 100-meter final on Saturday by placing sixth in Friday's preliminaries. She ran 12.02 to earn a place in the final.

Fellow Terrapin junior D'Ambour Lewis also will run on Saturday after placing seventh in the women's 200-meter prelims at 24.61, the best mark of the season by a Terrapin in that event.

Ashley Cromartie cut seven seconds off her season-best in the 1,500 meters with a mark of 4:31.31, finishing 14th overall. Cromartie, a junior, moved into ninth place on the Terps' all-time list in that event, one of only three marks on the all-time list that has come in the last 15 years.

Junior Jarenn Stewart missed a scoring spot in the men's long jump by the narrowest of margin, posting a mark of 22-10 1/2 to finish ninth. He tied Clemson sophomore Will Robinson at that mark, but Robinson got eighth by virtue of a better second attempt, 22-10 to 22-8.

Sophomore Shawn David and junior Chris Brown each had season-bests in the men's 400 prelims at 49.65 and 49.71. They qualified 11th and 12th, respectively, but missed earning a spot in the final with a top-eight time.

The women's high jump was moved to Saturday due to inclement weather and will be part of the final day of competition in the conference outdoor championships.
