COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Nine local teams will join the host Terrapins on Saturday in the annual Maryland Invitational track and field meet at the Kehoe Track Complex.
Field events begin at 10 a.m., with the 5,000-meter run opening action on the track at 10:15 a.m. The final running event of the day - the 4x400 relay - is tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m.
The Maryland Invitational is one of the highlights of the outdoor track and field season, as it gives local fans a chance to see the Terps on their home track.
"I think it's exciting for our kids to have the opportunity to run on campus in front of their friends and family," said head coach Andrew Valmon, who was recently named the head coach for the U.S. men's Olympic team for the London Games.
"This is a good tuneup for the ACCs and will give our kids a chance to run at home. This year's meet will have a fan-friendly schedule since it will be a little tighter."
Some Terrapins to watch on Saturday include sprinter DeAnna Brown, who had a career-best in the women's 100 last weekend at the Florida Relays; Amina Smith, who as a freshman is now among the top 10 all-time in the women's high jump; throwers Kristen Batts, Moriah Young, Jessie Echard and Josh Haghighi and football player Avery Graham, who will compete as a sprinter outdoors this spring.
Other schools scheduled to compete on Saturday are Adelphi, American, Howard CC, Indiana (Pa.), UMES, Mount St. Mary's, UMBC, Valley Forge Military Academy and Wagner.
