COLLEGE PARK, MD. -
University of Maryland senior Jasmyne Spencer has earned three prestigious honors as the 2011 season approaches for the Terrapin women's soccer team.
For the second time in her career, the Bay Shore, N.Y., native has been selected to the watch list for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy, the most prestigious award in women's collegiate soccer. Spencer was one of 42 overall players named to the list along with eight other Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) standouts.
She was also selected to the Soccer America preseason All-America list for the second-straight season and was named one of the top 20 upperclassmen in Division I by TopDrawerSoccer.com.
Spencer is coming off a junior season that saw her selected to the All-ACC first team for the second consecutive season and became the first Terp to earn NSCAA All-America honors since 1996. She was also a repeat first team All-Southeast after tying for the team lead with 10 goals and finishing second on the squad with 25 points. Her two-year totals of 20 goals and 50 points are the highest two-year aggregate for a Terrapin since 1995-96.
Considered the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer, the recipients of the MAC's Hermann Trophy are selected by Division I head coaches who are current members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. A committee of coaches narrows the list to 15 semifinalists in November, with three finalists announced in early December. The finalists are invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo., for a news conference on Friday, Jan. 6, 2010, where the winner will be announced, with a presentation banquet following.
Spencer and the No. 5 Terrapins kick off their 2011 season on Friday when they host No. 22 Minnesota at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field.
