The Maryland volleyball team opened its conference season with a sweep of Boston College Tuesday. The Terps (7-6, 1-0) turned in a solid defensive effort holding the Eagles to a .172 hitting percentage on route to the victory.
Sophomore Mary Cushman led the team with 12 kills. Junior Remy McBain converted 42 percent of her attack attempts and added 27 assists, and sophomore Sarah Harper tallied 20 digs.
The Terps distanced themselves from the Eagles midway through the first set. Maryland used a four-point spurt capped by a Cushman kill to take a 13-9 lead. With the Terrapins leading 21-16, Maryland scored the final four points to win the set.
In the second set with the Terps facing set point, Maryland blocked two consecutive Boston College attacks and senior Maddi Lee finished the point with a kill to keep the Terrapins alive and cut the Eagles' lead to 24-23. Junior Caitlin Adams and freshman Ashleigh Crutcher tied the match for the Terps with a block on the next point. In the second set, Maryland fought off three Boston College set points and went on to win the set 27-25 following a kill by freshman Adreene Elliott.
The Terps tied the third set at 21 following an error by Boston College's Tsvetelina Dureva. Following the error, Maryland scored four of the final five points to win the set, 25-22, and the match.
