The Maryland wrestling team has selected senior Josh Asper and juniors Christian Boley, Shane Gentry and Jimmy Sheptock as team captains for the 2012-13 season head coach Kerry McCoy announced Friday.
At 165 pounds, Asper is a two-time captain after being voted to the position last season. Asper finished the 2011-12 season with a record of 28-4 and earned All-American status for the second consecutive year with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
Boley notched a team-best 31-3 record last season en route to his first ACC title at 197 pounds and earned a bid to the NCAA Championships. Boley won two invitational titles (Brockport/Oklahoma Gold and Nittany Lion Open) last season and placed third at the prestigious Midlands Championships.
At 125 pounds, Gentry earned a bid to the NCAA Championships with a second-place finish at the ACC Championships. The native of Stafford, Va., compiled a record of 14-8 with three victories by major decision.
Sheptock was a standout for the Terps at 174 pounds during the 2011-12 season. Falling one win shy of All-American status at the NCAA Championships, Sheptock won the ACC title at 174 and finished the season with a 27-6 record including a team-high nine technical fall victories.
Team captains were determined by a vote of all the wrestlers and coaches.
The Terps open their season on Saturday, Oct. 27 at noon with the annual Red & Black Intrasquad meet. Matches for the intrasquad will be announced next week.
