In the final home match of her collegiate career, Remy McBain dished out 32 assists and added 12 digs, and Mary Cushman had 18 kills as the Maryland volleyball team sent seniors McBain and Caitlin Adams out in style with a 3-2 (25-27, 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 15-10) defeat of Duke Sunday afternoon at Comcast Pavilion.
As a team, the Terps (14-13, 5-10 ACC) knocked down a season-high 72 kills. Cushman led the team with 18, Ashleigh Crutcher had 16 and Emily Fraik tallied 12 on a .346 hitting percentage. Defensively, once again, Amy Dion was a strong presence along the backline. Dion recorded a personal-best 26 digs. As a team, Maryland finished with a season-high 79 digs.
In a match that featured 73 ties and lead changes, the fifth set was no different. But early on, it looked as though the Terps would cruise to victory. Maryland opened the frame on a 6-1 run with two kills from Crutcher, a kill a piece from Cushman and Fraik, and a service ace from Kelsey Hrebenach.
The Blue Devils responded with a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to one point. Following a Maryland timeout, the Terps scored four of the next five points and led 11-7 punctuated by an assisted block from Fraik and Hrebenach, and a Cushman kill. Duke cut the lead to two points, but the Terps closed out the match on a 4-1 run with the final two kills coming from Hrebenach and Crutcher.
The first set was highlighted by defense. Maryland held Duke to .189 hitting and the Blue Devils held the Terps to .118 hitting. The Terrapins climbed out of an early 5-1 hole to tie the match at six. The remainder of the set remained tight as the two teams went back and forth.
A kill from Duke's Emily Sklar gave the Blue Devils set point at 24-22. A kill from Crutcher and an error by Duke knotted the set at 24. The Terps fought off another set point at 25-24, but fell 27-25.
Fraik stepped to the forefront in the second set. The freshman converted 50 percent of her attack opportunities and finished with five kills during the frame. Fraik had three kills and a block as part of a 7-1 Terrapin run to begin the set.
Duke responded and eventually tied the set at 14 and took the lead at 16-15. With the Blue Devils leading 23-22, Adreené Elliott blocked a Duke attack as the Terps scored the final three points of the set capped by a service ace from Mackenzie Dagostino.
Maryland's best offensive performance of the afternoon came in the third set. The Terps totaled 17 kills and finished with a .452 hitting percentage. The set was nip-and-tuck throughout. Maryland opened up its largest lead of the set at 23-19 aided by back-to-back aces by Dagostino. The Blue Devils cut the deficit 24-22, but McBain closed out the set with one of her nine kills.
With 25 ties and lead changes in the fourth set, neither team was able to gain an advantage. Duke eventually edged out a fourth set win courtesy of two Maryland errors to close the frame to send it to a fifth set.
