QUEENS, N.Y. -
For the second straight game the offense cranked out double-digit hits as Maryland recorded its largest margin of victory this season with a 16-4 win over St. John's Wednesday afternoon.
The Terps (17-9), who were coming off a 15-hit performance at Miami on Sunday, had a season-high 16 against a Red Storm team that had won nine of their last 10.
But, unlike the victory over the Hurricanes, when Korey Wacker and Jordan Hagel did the heavy lifting, 11 different Terps contributed at least one hit on Wednesday.
Hagel, Kyle Convissar, Ryan Holland, K.J. Hockaday and Alfredo Rodriguez led the way with two hits apiece. Rodriguez, who leads the team with 19 RBIs, had four against St. John's (13-11) including a three-run home run.
Hagel drove in two runs, scored three and had a pair of stolen bases. Convissar and Holland also had two RBIs.
Maryland assumed control with a five-run third inning in which it scored all of its runs with two outs. The Terps scored at least one run in seven of nine innings.
Charlie Haslup (2-1) pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief, scattering five hits to earn the win. He entered in the third with the bases loaded and nobody out, but escaped after allowing just one run. St. John's didn't score another run until the ninth, when the game was well out of reach.
Leading 6-3 after Haslup worked out of trouble in the third, Maryland scored the game's next 10 runs.
Holland roped a two-run triple in the fourth, Convissar had a run-scoring double in the sixth and Hagel drove in two with a single up the middle in the seventh to make it 11-3.
In the eighth, Tomo Delp drove in a run with a double and Rodriguez followed two batters later with a three-run homer to left field, his second of the season.
The Terrapin defense was also sharp, turning a season-high three groundball double plays.
St. John's starting pitcher Brendan Lobban (2-2), who allowed six runs in three innings, took the loss. Pat Talbut and Jimmy Brennan led the Red Storm offense with three hits each.
