CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -
Maryland dropped the first game of a three-game series to Boston College, 10-3, while the second game was suspended in a 4-4 tie due to darkness.
The Terps (17-10, 2-8 ACC) and Eagles, who were playing a doubleheader on Friday, will resume game two Saturday at approximately 1:30 p.m. The third and final game of the series will follow after the completion of game two.
In the first game, Boston College (11-14, 3-7 ACC) scored five runs in the first inning to take control. After Matt McGovern's RBI single, Andrew Lawrence hit a grand slam to put the Eagles out to an early 5-1 lead.
Boston College tacked on another run in the second, and then scored three in the fourth inning on four hits and a Maryland error for a 9-1 advantage.
In the fourth, Anthony Melchionda had a RBI single, and after a Terrapin error allowed another run, Rob Moir drove in a run with a single through the right side.
Maryland answered with single runs in the sixth and seventh, as K.J. Hockaday hit a solo home run and drove in another run an inning later with a RBI single.
But Boston College held Maryland scoreless over the final two innings to close out the game.
Eric Stevens (4-1), who went 5 2/3 innings and allowed just two runs on five hits, earned the win for Boston College. Maryland starting pitcher Brady Kirkpatrick (1-4) took the loss after surrendering five runs in one inning.
In game two, the Terrapins erased a three-run deficit by scoring one run in the seventh, eighth and ninth to tie it up and send the game into extras. Before the two teams could take the field for the 10th, the contest was halted due to darkness.
Jordan Hagel, who went 3-for-4, started Maryland's rally with a solo home run in the seventh. Michael Montville and Kyle Convissar had sacrifice flies in each of the next two innings to tie the game.
After a scoreless 10th, though, the game was halted due to darkness. The two teams will finish game two Saturday at noon, with the third and final game of the series starting 30 minutes afterwards.
