The Maryland volleyball team received contributions across the board in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-21) defeat of NJIT Saturday afternoon in its second match of the Blackbird Invitational at the Wellness Center on the campus of LIU Brooklyn.
Junior Mary Cushman and freshman Kamrin Gold each finished with eight kills, while sophomores Ashleigh Crutcher and Adreené Elliott added seven.
As a team, the Terps (7-4, 0-1 ACC) notched double-digit blocks for the second consecutive game. After posting eight in yesterday's win over St. John's, Elliott contributed seven of the squad's 11 blocks on Saturday
The Highlanders gained the upper hand to start the match and led 7-4 following a Maryland attacking error. After a timeout, the Terps regrouped and scored 11 of the next 13 points to take a 15-9 lead.
Behind kills from Crutcher and Elliott, the Terps pushed their lead to 20-14. Freshman Emily Fraik added a kill and assisted on a block with Crutcher for the Terrapins next two points.
After the Highlanders cut the deficit to three points, Gold tallied back-to-back kills to clinch the set for the Terps.
The second set featured nine ties and five lead changes. Maryland was finally able to break open the set leading by one point at 16-15. After a Highlander kill brought NJIT within one point, Maryland scored the final nine points of the set to go up 2-0 heading into the intermission.
During the run, senior Remy McBain tallied an ace and Cushman added two kills.
In the final set, Gold broke a 10-10 tie with her eighth kill of the match to spark an 11-2 run punctuated by a Cushman kill and an assisted block by Elliott and McBain. NJIT cut the lead to three points at 24-21, but Crutcher and Fraik combined on a block to secure the win.
Maryland concludes the Blackbird Invitational tonight against LIU Brooklyn. The match is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.
