Terps Begin ACC Play in Weekend Invitational

The Maryland volleyball team (4-2) continues its 2012 home schedule this weekend with the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational. The Terps welcome Boston College, George Washington and No. 16 Tennessee to Comcast Pavilion for the two-day tournament.

Friday night, the Terps take on Boston College at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the squad faces George Washington at 1:30 p.m. and concludes the invitational against the Volunteers at 7:30 p.m.

Maryland went 1-2 last weekend in the Maryland Invitational. The Terps defeated Binghamton in three sets, but dropped matches to Seton Hall (3-1) and Ohio State (3-2).

Parking Information

For Friday evening's matches, parking is restricted around the Comcast Center prior to 4 p.m. After 4 p.m., parking is available and free.

There are no restrictions on parking near the Comcast Center for Saturday's matches.

Scouting the Terps

2012 Maryland Terrapins: 4-2, 0-0 ACC

The Terps dropped a four-set match to Seton Hall in the first game of the Maryalnd Invitational (recap | box score) despite 18 kills from sophomore Ashleigh Crutcher and a combined 55 assists from senior Remy McBain and freshman Mackenzie Dagostino.

Maryland bounced back Saturday morning with a sweep of Binghamton (recap | box score). Crutcher once again led the team with 17 kills while Dagostino finished with 17 assists and seven digs.

The nighcap saw the Terps take the first two sets from Ohio State in impressive fashion. But the Buckeyes rallied for the win (recap | box score). Crutcher had a career-high 19 kills in the effort. McBain snagged her fifth career triple-double with 10 kills, 30 assists and 13 digs.

Through six matches, Crutcher leads the Terps with 82 kills and sophomore Adreené Elliott is second with 59 on a team-high .391 hitting percentage. McBain and Dagostino have 141 and 118 assists, respectively. Junior Sarah Harper is first on the team with 91 digs.


Scouting the Eagles

2012 Boston College Eagles: 4-3, 0-0 ACC

The Eagles enter the weekend fresh off a trip to Los Angeles, Calif., for the USC Invitational. Boston College lost to Northern Iowa to open the tournament, rebounded to defeat Mississippi State in its second match, and lost to No. 5 USC in the finale in four sets.

Offensively, the Eagles are led by Katty Workman. The freshman has a league-high 108 kills and is averaging 4.00 kills per set.

Through seven matches, Boston College is hitting at a .199 clip, while holding its opponents to a .188 hitting percentage.


Scouting the Colonials

2012 George Washington Colonials: 1-6, 0-0 Atlantic 10

The Colonials went 1-3 last weekend at the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic. The squad dropped matches to Florida Gulf Coast, UMKC and Wyoming, and defeated Bethune Cookman in three sets for its first win of the season.

Lauren Whyte and Kelsey Newman are the Colonials top hitters. The duo has 77 kills and 68 kills, respectively.

The Colonials are averaging 11.04 kills per set and are hitting .142. Defensively, opponents are averaging 12.25 kills per set and are hitting .251.


Scouting the Volunteers

2012 Tennessee Lady Volunteers: 4-2, 0-0 SEC

The No. 16 Lady Volunteers enter the weekend after winning 2 of 3 matches at the Shocker Volleyball Classic with its lone defeat coming against No. 21 BYU. Tennessee's only other loss came against No. 6 Florida State at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic to open the season.

Tennessee's attack is led by Kelsey Robinson. Robinson has a team-high 124 kills and is averaging 4.77 kills per set.

So far, the squad is averaging 2.62 service aces per set and has totaled 68 led by 21 service aces from Mercedes Vaughn.

Defensively, the Lady Vols have two players with 90 or more digs in Ellen Mullins (95) and Robinson (91).


Head Coach Tim Horsmon

Tim Horsmon is in his fifth season in charge of the Maryland volleyball team. With the Terps' victory over Villanova on Aug. 24, Horsmon won his 50th career game at Maryland.


Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational

The Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational is in its fifth season. The Terps are 7-5 in the tournament all-time. Last year, Maryland went 2-1 with wins over Delaware and Yale.


Honored Terps

With 54 kills last weekend, sophomore Ashleigh Crutcher earned a spot on the Maryland Invitational All-Tournament team. Crutcher leads the Terps in kills with 82.

Sophomore Adreené Elliott took home MVP honors at the Villanova Classic. In three matches, the Winston-Salem, N.C., native tallied 26 kills and 13 total blocks. Elliott finished the weekend with a .353 hitting percentage.

Junior Sarah Harper and freshman Kamrin Gold joined Elliott on the all-tournament team. Harper finished with 49 digs, while Gold tallied 18 kills including 11 against Robert Morris.


Record Watch

Junior Sarah Harper moved past Lindsay Davey (908) into 10th all-time in Maryland history in digs Friday night against Seton Hall. With 937 digs, Harper trails Daune Koester by 42 digs for ninth all-time.

Senior Remy McBain ranks fifth in program history with 2,785 assists. She trails Aimee Huddleston for fourth all-time by 785 assists.


Fresh Faces

The Terps welcomed seven newcomers to the squad this season. The seven-member class was given highest honorable mention honors by PrepVolleyball.com. The 2012 recruiting class included two top-50 student-athletes in Mackenzie Dagostino and Kelsey Hrenbenach.
