The Maryland volleyball rallied late in the third set, but No. 16 Tennessee held off the Terps for a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-12, 36-34) Saturday night in the final match of the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational at Comcast Pavilion.
Senior Remy McBain finished with 14 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore Ashleigh Crutcher led the Terps (5-4, 0-1 ACC) with 12 kills.
The Lady Vol offense was clicking in the opening two sets. Tennessee finished with a .441 hitting percentage and .471 hitting percentage in the first and second sets, respectively.
The opening set was tight early with the two teams exchanging points. With the match tied at 6-6, the Terps rattled off three consecutive points behind kills from McBain and freshman Kamrin Gold along with a block by McBain and senior Caitlin Adams.
The Lady Vols responded with six of the next nine points to tie the set at 12-12 and eventually grew the lead to four points at 18-14. The Terps pulled within three points on two occasions, but would not get any closer as Tennessee won the opening set.
Tennessee opened the second set on a 9-2 run and did not allow the Terps to gain any momentum. Tennessee increased its advantage to 20-10 and went on to win the second frame 25-12.
Following intermission, the Terps played with a renewed focus. With consecutive kills from sophomore Adreené Elliott, Crutcher and Gold, Maryland forced the Lady Vols to call timeout holding a 9-6 advantage. Tennessee responded and took the lead at 12-11, but Crutcher brought the Terps even with another kill.
The remainder of the set remained tight with neither team gaining an advantage larger than two points. The final set featured 22 ties and 10 lead changes.
The conclusion of the match featured 12 set points before Tennessee eventually prevailed.
The Terps hit the road next weekend and travel to the Blackbird Invitational on the campus of Long Island University in Brooklyn. N.Y. Maryland opens the tournament Friday, Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. against St. John's.
