Ben Bachmann begins his fifth year as pitching coach for the Terrapins. Bachmann has made a significant impact on the Maryland baseball program. This is evidenced by the school records set within the past three seasons by his pitching staff. Last season he helped develop Justin Hulse into the team's closer where he set the Maryland single-season record for appearances with 28. Hulse also recorded five saves, the fifth highest total in Terrapin history.
In 2003, he helped turn Steve Schmoll from a pitcher with a 7.35 ERA in his junior season, into the all-time and single season strikeout leader in Maryland history. In 2002, Bachmann helped the Terrapin pitchers establish school records for strikeouts (451) and saves (10). He also saw senior closer Ken Beck set a new single-season mark for saves with seven, and become one of four Terps taken in the 2002 Major League Baseball draft.
Prior to his time at Maryland, Bachmann was part of the coaching staff at Lynn Universty for two seasons. Bachmann led the Lynn pitching staff to a school record 379 strikeouts in 1999 and helped lower the team ERA by nearly four runs per game since taking over in 1998.
Bachmann is a 1997 graduate of Lewis University with a degree in business administration. He was a tri-captain during his senior season as a player for the Flyers. He also was named academic all-conference at Lewis and he earned his master's degree in business administration from Lynn in 2000.
Prior to Lewis, Bachmann was an All-American at Kankakee C.C. in Illinois. The Michigan City, Ind., native was a first-team all-region selection as a sophomore and his freshman ERA ranked third in the nation.
In addition to his responsibilities with the Maryland pitchers, Bachmann is the chief administrator of the Terry Rupp Terrapin Baseball Camp, held over the summer.
