Maryland Wraps Up ECAC/IC4A Meet Sunday

Princeton, N.J. - The Maryland men's and women's track & field teams wrapped up the 2013 ECAC/IC4A Championships at Princeton University on Sunday. The three-day meet fell May 10-12.

The women's field events led the team with impressive finishes from senior Moriah Young and junior Amina Smith. Young not only accomplished a career-best, but also broke the Maryland all-time record in the hammer throw with a distance of 186-00 to earn her an eighth place finish. The previous record was 185-06 and dates back to 2008.

Smith brought home third in the high jump with a height of 5-10.50. This is Smith's season-best height and beats her own record for sixth-best in Terp outdoor track & field history.

Freshman Sonya Napariu tied for 23rd in the women's discus with a distance of 136-00.

In the women's track events, junior Julie Sinkovitz (2:08.94) and sophomore Myah Hicks (2:09.21) excelled with sixth and seventh place finishes, respectively, in the 800-meter run. Both of the girls reached season-best times in the preliminary round for the event.

Becky Yep completed the women's 5,000 meters in a time of 17:26.59 to place 22nd.

Sophomore Pat Cole and junior Josh Haghighi competed in the finals for the men. Cole finished 12th in the hammer throw with a distance of 147-00. He also took 31st in the men's discus (147-00).

Haghighi finished 23rd in the finals of the men's shot put with a distance of 50-11.00.

Freshman Jordan Simmons and senior Arielle Statham also participated in the meet. Simmons qualified for the semi-finals with a time of 12:14 in the 100-meter preliminaries and finished 12th. Statham competed in the preliminary round of the 400 meters and ran a time of 56.39.

The Terps will be back in action for the NCAA East Preliminary rounds. Maryland's competitors will be announced on Thursday, May 16 at 1 p.m.
