BLACKSBURG, Va – The Maryland women's tennis team finished competition play at the ITA Mid-Atlantic Regionals in Blacksburg, Va., Monday.
Alexandra Stanova was the highlight of the Terps' weekend as the sophomore advanced to the singles semifinals. Olga Bredikhina also made a nice run, losing to eventual finalist Illinca Stoica in the round of 16.
Stanova advanced to the round of 16 by notching wins over Victiore Saperstein of Georgetown (6-2, 6-2), and 6-1, 6-3, over Lana Robins of GW. Stanova advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating, 6-1,6-3, UVa's Maci Epstein. She faced Nikol Hristova of ODU in her quarterfinal contest and won a close 7-5, 7-5 decision.
Stanova ran into the Stoica in the semifinals and dropped a heartbreaking two setter, 7-6, 6-4.
Bredikhina advanced to the round of 16 by clinching victories against 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, Brittany Boys from Richmond and, 6-2-, 6-2, over Malin Allgurin from Longwood. Bredikhina was then unable to overcome Stoica, who advanced past the Terrapin sophomore, 6-0, 6-1.
Ekaterina Tour dropped her first round match to Amanda Keller of Navym 6-1, 1-6, 6-2. Nataliya Bredikhina fell in two sets to Olivia Thaler of William & Mary, while Kristina Hovsepyan lost, 6-1, 6-4, to Elena Cerezo-Codina of Virginia Tech. Natalie Sayer of Radford knocked out Welma Luus in the opening round by a 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 score.
The tournament started on Friday with singles qualifying. Olivia Gaudreault lost to Pittsburgh's Amber Washington and did not advance to the main draw.
The Terps also competed in the doubles matches. All three Maryland doubles pairs, Bredikihina/Luus, Hovespyan/Tour, Gaudreault/Stanova, advanced to the round of 16. Hovespyan/Tour was the only pair to advance to the quarterfinals, with wins, 8-6, over Liberty's Rivera/Yang, and 8-4, over W&M's Loomans/Nemchinov.
The pair went one further, making it to the semifinals before losing to Mercer and Morton of Virginia, 8-2.
