COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland men's soccer team notched its fifth-straight win with a 3-1 victory against Santa Clara Saturday night at Ludwig Field.
Maryland (8-5-2, 3-2-1 Big Ten) picked up second-half goals from freshman George Campbell, fifth-year senior Jereme Raley and junior Mael Corboz as the defense limited its opponent to one or fewer goals for the fifth-consecutive match.
Campbell picked up his long-awaited first collegiate tally with a beautiful strike in the 58th minute. After Mikey Ambrose beat a host of Santa Clara defenders in the midfield, he chipped a ball to Campbell who promptly found the back of the net from 20 yards.
Raley moved the lead to 2-0 with a 72nd-minute score from short distance. Tsubasa Endoh's corner kick was redirected by David Kabelik and Raley put on the finishing touch, beating Bronco goalkeeper Carl Carrwick for his fourth career goal and first since 2012.
Corboz made it a 3-0 contest six minutes later when his free kick from 25 yards went top shelf past a leaping Carrwick for the junior's team-leading sixth goal of the year.
Santa Clara (5-6-3) avoided the shutout with a goal at 82:45. Haru Kent finished from eight yards with a roller across the goal mouth to beat Zack Steffen at the back post for its lone goal of the match.
Maryland outshot Santa Clara 12-5 on the day, including a team-high five from Shinsky. A 37th-minute open-look header from the senior sailed high of the crossbar and, after Endoh hurried goalkeeper Carl Carrwick's attempt at a clear, Shinsky's follow-up blast 30 yards went just wide near the end of the half.
“This was a great grind-it-out win for us. Santa Clara is a team who is better than their record…organized, disciplined and competed extremely hard,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “I thought we were a little rusty in the first half but came out in the second with a lot of quality. This was one of those tough games where you need to find a way to win and we did.”
Maryland is back in action Tuesday when it welcomes Hartwick for a 7 p.m. tilt at Ludwig Field. The Terps wrap up the home regular season slate with a match against Ohio State next Saturday.
