CLARION, Pa. – University of Maryland newcomers Alfred Bannister and Dawson Peck both notched fourth-place finishes at the Clarion Open in Clarion, Pa. Sunday.
A highly regarded freshman from LaPlata, Bannister posted his first collegiate victory with a 4-2 decision over Clarion's John Pezze in the first round. The 141-pounder then defeated Max Good of Bloomsburg, 13-5, in the second round.
Bannister booked a trip to the semifinals with a hard fought 2-1 win over the unattached Tyler Smith. Edinboro's Mitchell Port, the No. 2 ranked 141-pounder in the nation, halted Bannister's main bracket run with a 10-4 win.
Bannister then dropped a third-place bout rematch with Smith, 5-4, to place fourth.
Peck, a transfer from Chattanooga, competed in the heavyweight bracket. The Pennsylvania native pinned Amon Willis of Cleveland State in the first round before notching a tech fall over USMAPS' Austin Buttry in the second round.
A quarterfinal victory over Clarion's Evan Daley advanced Peck to the semifinals where he dropped a 4-3 decision to Edinboro's Billy Miller.
Peck made it to the third place match with a win over Jake Gunning of Buffalo, but lost in his final bout to Bucknell's Joe Stofli.
