INDIANAPOLIS – University of Maryland wrestlers Geoffrey Alexander (133 pounds) and Shyheim Brown (141) were included in the first of four NCAA coaches' panel rankings for the 2014-15 wrestling season, released Thursday.
The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2015 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in St. Louis.
Alexander, a two-time NCAA qualifier at 133 pounds, is ranked No. 19 in the ratings. The redshirt junior is 12-4 and has defeated ranked wrestlers Mason Beckman (10th) and Nick Zanetta (32nd). He leads the Terrapins in dual wins (10), dual points scored (39) and dual bonus points (21).
An NCAA qualifier last season, Brown is ranked No. 22 after accumulating a 16-7 record so far this season. The sophomore leads the team in technical falls (4) and t-2 in dual wins (8).
Wrestlers in each weight class will be measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches' rankings to earn spots in their qualifying tournaments for the 2015 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The coaches' rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament.
For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class. In order to be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in the weight class and have wrestled within the last 30 days.
Senior Spencer Myers, a consensus top-20 heavyweight in national polls, has wrestled just three matches this season and is not yet eliglible for the rankings.
