2015 Final NLO Brackets
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Redshirt senior Geoffrey Alexander (133) and redshirt sophomore Dawson Peck (285) both went undefeated in their matches for Maryland (3-4, 0-1 Big Ten) at the 2015 Nittany Lion Open Sunday. The event featured dozens of teams and over 300 wrestlers from around the region including Big Ten counterparts Penn State, Rutgers and Ohio State.
Alexander was in action for the first time this year after missing the first month of the season due to injury. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native was dominant in his first match of the day over Sam Cali of Rutgers, winning by technical fall, 20-4 in the round of 16. Alexander then went to work on Korbin Myers of Endinboro in the quarterfinals, winning by major decision 10-0. He elected to forfeit his semifinal match.
Peck also had a solid run in the heavyweight bracket, winning three matches on the day. Peck notched an early pin over Tanner Sheffield (Army Prep) to start the day, earning a fall at 0:37 in the round of 16. He posted his second straight fall in his quarterfinal match, besting Christian Colucci (Lehigh) in 4:11. Peck secured his final victory on the day with a 3-2 decision over Mike Kosoy of North Carolina State in the semis, before forfeiting his finals match.
The Terps had several entries in the 141 bracket, including redshirt freshman Adam Whitesell, who went 2-2 on the day. Whitesell notched a fall over Nick Mayer (Finger Lakes Prep) at 2:51 in his opening round match. Whitesell then notched an 11-7 decision over Ryan Pomrinca of Lehigh in the round of 32, before he was knocked off by Jared Prince (Navy Prep) in his following match.
After dropping his initial match, redshirt junior Billy Rappo (141) made some noise in the consolation bracket with five wins. Rappo first downed Kyle Lukowich (Kent State) by decision 5-2, then pinned Triston Law (Penn State) at 0:47. Next to fall was David Pipa (Lehigh) at 1:01 in the #1 round of 16. Rappo edged Matthew West of Army 8-7 in his ensuing match, then made it five in a row with a 12-10 decision over Jon Mele in the quarters for his team-leading 13th victory of the season. Rappo's day came to an end against Penn State's Gary Dinmore, who won a 3-2 decision in the second quarterfinal round.
The Maryland wrestling team will return to competition on Friday, December 11 when the squad hosts its first Big Ten match of the season against Nebraska. First match at the XFINITY Center Pavilion is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
