CONWAY, S.C. – Postgame quotes following Maryland's 7-3 win over Western Kentucky.
Soph. 2B Brandon Lowe
On the home run:
“They had been working me inside all day and I saw it out of his hand. It was one of those times you didn't even feel it come off the bat. It felt pretty good.
On offense and comeback:
“It was just about letting our nerves settle a little bit. Everybody is kind of jacked up for the beginning of the season. As soon as we settled in a little bit, we realized that we didn't need to pressure ourselves anymore. We're a good enough offense, we're a good team, we don't need to worry.”
On emotions:
“There wasn't one person that wasn't jumping around. It's Opening Day, everyone is pumped.”
Head Coach John Szefc
On Shawaryn's struggles early:
“Sometimes with real good arms, the best time to get to them is early in the game. Once he settled in, he was really strong. Shaffer came in and was outstanding behind him. Its the first time out for a lot of these guys, even our veteran guys. They still have to get back out there and get the dirt under their cleats against somebody else.”
On freshman:
“Bechtold, Smith and Shaffer all played big roles in that game. Shaffer is a big-time strike-thrower. Shawaryn has helped him get ready to pitch at this level. He's got plus stuff and he throws a lot of strikes. It's hard not to run him out there. In Andrew and Kevin's case, those guys had seven and eight pitch at bats and really helped set our two big innings up. Our young guys played very well.”
On power potential of lineup:
“We definitely have a lot of pop, a lot of experience and guys that can hit for power. It's just a matter of how things go. The wind was blowing out today but Brandon got into his pretty good. His hit was huge. Jose had a huge at bat going the other way late in the game to pad our lead. That's what those guys are supposed to do. They've been through a lot of wars here, so that's what you hope your best players will do.”
