NEW YORK – The Maryland women's tennis team fell to 2-3 on the season, as the No. 43 Columbia Lions claimed a 5-2 victory over the Terps, Saturday afternoon at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
The Terps duo of Olga and Nataliya Bredikhina notched the first win of the day defeating Alexandra Solovyev and Adi Milstein, 8-2.
The Lions responded and claimed the doubles point in the higher spots. In the No. 2 match, Kanika Vaidya and Rima Asatrian defeated Ekaterina Tour and Kristina Hovsepyan, 8-6, while Tina Jiang and Crystal Leung won 8-6 over Welma Luus and Alexandra Stanova in the No. 1 spot.
Vaidya got Columbia off to a good start in singles, winning over Tour, 6-1, 6-2. Luus and Nataliya Bredikhina gave the Terps some life, with wins over Solovyev, 6-1, 6-4, and Asatrian, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Leung defeated Kristina Hovsepyan, 6-1,3-6, 7-5, and Vivian Cheng won over Olga Bredikhina 7-6(5),6-3, to close it out for the Lions.
Maryland returns to action tomorrow against St. John's. Action is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
