NEW YORK - Boosted by a strong singles performance, the Maryland women's tennis team upended St. John's, 4-1, at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Sunday.
The Terrapins dropped the double points before rallying to win all four completed singles matches. The contests at No. 5 and No. 6 singles were not completed.
“We started slow in doubles,” head coach Daria Panova said. “We were able to turn it around in singles. Everyone came out hungry and ready to fight.”
The Red Storm notched wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to take the doubles point. Senior Welma Luus put the Terps on the board with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4.
Freshman Ekaterina Tour placed Maryland in the lead, defeating Anna Morozova 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Alexandra Stanova and junior Nataliya Bredikhina both won three-set affairs to give the Terrapins the victory. Stanova won 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 at the top singles position while Bredikhina triumphed 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Maryland makes its return home this weekend for two matches. The Terrapins take on Harvard Saturday before facing off with Cornell on Sunday.
