ROSEMONT, Ill. – Goalkeeper Kyle Bernlohr has been named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after holding Navy to just one goal in the Maryland men's lacrosse team's season-opening victory Saturday.
The Akron, Ohio, native made 12 saves in his first collegiate start after waiting three seasons for his turn behind four-time All-ACC honoree Niko Amato. Bernlohr allowed just one goal in the 8-1 victory over Navy, holding the Midshipmen scoreless for the first 38:06 of the game.
Bernlohr and the Terrapins held Navy to just one goal for the first time in the long-contested series since 1931. The victory stretched Maryland's season-opening win streak to 22 consecutive games dating back to 1993.
It is the first Big Ten honor awarded of any kind for a Maryland men's lacrosse player.
The Terps close a two-game season-opening road swing this weekend New Haven, Conn., against Yale. Maryland is 10-1 all-time against Yale.
