COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 54 Maryland women's tennis team stormed to a 7-0 victory over Rutgers in its first-ever Big Ten match at the Tennis Center at College Park Saturday.
The Terrapins easily won the doubles point before sweeping all six singles contests. Freshman Ekaterina Tour notched dominant performance at No. 2, winning 6-0, 6-3.
"I am very proud of the team," head coach Daria Panova said. "Every single one of them came to win today and even when things didn't go their way they still found a way to win."
Maryland got an early lead in doubles when Olga and Nataliya Bredikhina defeated Farris Cunningham and Lee Levy, 8-2. Welma Luus and Alexandra Stanova finished off the point with an 8-5 victory over Lindsay Balsamo and Gina Li.
Stanova nabbed an important win at No. 1 singles, taking out Li, 6-1, 2-6 (7-5). Both Bredikhina sisters notched straight forward wins. Nataliya won, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 while Olga captured a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6.
Kristina Hovsepyan won a routine 6-2, 6-2 decision over Levy and Luus finished the Maryland shutout with a 4-6, 6-1 (7-3) victory against Balsamo.
Maryland returns to the court against Penn at noon at the Tennis Center at College Park.
