COLLEGE PARK, MD. – The No. 43 Maryland women's tennis team dropped its contest against No. 13 Michigan, 5-2, at the Tennis Center at College Park Sunday afternoon.
Maryland ended its six match winning streak and fell to 8-5 on the season and 2-1 in the Big Ten.
"We had a great opportunity today," head coach Daria Panova said. "Unfortunately we let it slip."
The doubles session saw Maryland duo Welma Luus and Alexandra Stanova edged out by Michigan pair Emina Bektas and Alex Najarian, 8-4. The doubles point was secured by Michigan in the No. 2 position with an 8-2 victory from Ronit Yurovsky and Sarah Lee over Ekaterina Tour and Kristina Hovsepyan.
In singles, Olga Bredikhina gave some Terps some life with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (8), win over Mira Ruder- Hook while Stanova defeated Yurovsky, 6-2, 6-2.
Michigan responded by winning four matches in straight sets. Nataliya Bredikhina was defeated by Najarian, 6-4, 6-2, as Tour fell to Bektas, 6-0, 6-1. Luus snapped her singles winning streak with a 7-6, 6-1, loss to Lee. To clinch victory for Michigan Sara Remynse notched a 6-1, 6-3, win over Olivia Gaudreault.
The Terps return to action tomorrow against Morgan State. Action is scheduled to begin at noon.
