Myers Moves to Quarterfinals at NCAA Championships

ST. LOUIS – Senior heavyweight Spencer Myers won two matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2015 NCAA Wrestling Championships at Scottrade Center in St. Louis Thursday night.

Myers upended third seeded Bobby Telford of Iowa before taking out No. 14 Joe Stolfi of Bucknell. Myers will face No. 4 Adam Coon of Michigan in tomorrow's quarterfinals, which can been seen on ESPNU at 11 a.m. ET.

“Spencer wrestled well today,” head coach Kerry McCoy said. “The whole point of the first day is to get your hand raised and he did that. He got an exciting win in the first round and a big win in the second. Now we just have to come back and do it again tomorrow.”

In the first round, Myers jumped all over Telford in the opening period, notching a takedown and a near fall to take a 4-0 lead. The senior gave up an escape in the first, but after choosing neutral in the second period, nabbed another takedown to take a 6-1 advantage.

Myers survived Telford's attacks in the third period to emerge with a 7-5 victory.

In the second round, Myers took on Stofli. After an extremely tight contest, Myers was able to take the Bucknell grappler to his back in the second overtime period and nab the fall at 8:30.

Redshirt junior Lou Mascola made an impression at 157 pounds on Thursday, upsetting No. 5 Cody Pack of South Dakota State in the first round after winning his pigtail match.

In that contest, Mascola took on Immanuel Kerr-Brown. After taking an early first period lead, Mascola was able to fend off enough Kerr-Brown attacks in the final period to win 11-10 with riding time.

Against Pack, Mascola trailed 7-3 at the end of the second period, but mounted a furious comeback in the third and eventually nabbed a late takedown to defeat the No. 4 seed 10-9. Mascola fell in the second round to Lehigh's Mitch Minotti, 7-2.

133-pound Geoffrey Alexander was eliminated Thursday after falling in his first two matches.

Tomorrow's third session begins at 11 a.m. from Scottrade Center. The semifinals will kick off at 8 p.m.
