COLLEGE PARK, MD. – The No. 47 Maryland women's tennis team was edged out by Penn State on Saturday at the Tennis Center at College Park, 3-4. The Terps fell to 9-6 on the season and 2-2 in the Big Ten conference.
Maryland started of the morning strong by winning the doubles point. Sisters Olga Bredikhina and Nataliya Bredikhina clinched an 8-4 victory over Nittany Lions pair Kimberley-Ann Surin and Devan McCluskey. To secure the doubles point for the Terps, Welma Luus and Alexandra Stanova defeated Victoria Kisialeva and Dasha Sapogove, 8-1.
The Nittany Lions wasted no time in getting Penn State on the board with a 6-2, 6-1 win from Surin over N. Bredikhina. In the No. 5 spot, O. Bredikhina fell to McCulskey 6-4, 6-3, while Olivia Gaudreault was edged out by Jacqueline Zuhse 6-4, 7-5.
Luus and Tour energized the Terps by defeating Sapagova, 6-2, 6-3, and Kisialeva, 6-3, 4-6, 1(9). Penn State came out on top with a hard earned victory from Katia Blik over Stanova, 7-6(5), 5-6, 6-4.
The Terps take on No. 22 Ohio State on Sunday morning at the Tennis Center at College Park. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
